Pugazh Tamil Movie Review

"Maran's" school of directors have a common game plan. Their heroes are well grounded person, with a realistic arc, a neighborhood love and life-like sidekicks. They accidentally get involved in a mess usually involving big shots or politicians which keep their normal life in question. They react to it to fetch the ease of mind.(after watching movies right from polladhavan to pugazh, I can etch out their common mechanics of writing)

Also, there is an inanimate object, may it be a pulsar bike in polladhavan or a ground here to which the protagonist is tight bonded with emotional strings.

With the points said above, one can guess the basic plot of this movie "Pugazh". Yes, here Jai is the protagonist (he is not a mere bog next door, but an angry young man who boils at wrong things) and the movie revolves round a "ground".

Mani Maran writes the movie with 3 well written characters, their arcs and their interaction with the protagonist.

1. One is a communist ideology filled uncle of Jai, who preaches the messages the director wants the director to perceive.. But the director had a doubt whether we can get it..so put everything in dialogues... Make things explicit to the core.
2. An opportunist friend, who sinks in debts and when aided with a post, tries to corrupt his soul..his character is the skeleton for the first half
3. An excellent character of Karunas, Jai s brother...he gives the soul to the character with his dramatic acting skills which appears much natural

Till the first half, everything goes well. The writing is realistic, we straighten up our spine expecting a movie like "Madras". But things get messy then. The director now possesses a conflict in his mind. How to propel the plot?? To continue the realistic narration or go cinematical?

He aborts the evolution of the plot, he leaves everything which worked out well since then and makes the movie an unrealistic - mass hero type masala venture.

This leaves us, especially after the tiring climax fight, with a feel that we have witnessed an yet another hero narrative film..all the screenplay devices he had wisely handled till then fumbles, or we don't mind them.

Lack of consistency in writing and a hyper realistic way to end the movie turns the real villains for an other wise good flick..the same way how Vetri maran ends in polladhavan.

I think the Maran's school should reconsider their formulaic writing especially in second half. It really dampens their hard work.

Verdict: A good political drama goofed up by dramatic end

Rating: 3/5

Inroducing a unique scoring for movies, WoodsDeck Score

What does WoodsDeck Score mean and how do we use it to rate a movie?

WoodsDeck Score denotes the overall score given for a film and unlike other rating methods, we@WoodsDeck estimate it from the average of three components:

1. User reviews

2. Critic reviews

3. Crowd Sentiment

So do not worry about the ratings of your favourite movie given here. There are the unprejudiced opinions of what we have analysed from over an average 1 lakh audiences varying from users to critics. Checkout the WoodsDeck Score page for Tamil movie Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum below.

How is the WoodsDeck Score calculated ?

Let us walk you through the backstage operations done here. We present you before the breakdown elements that decide the final scoring.

1) User reviews:

Reviews and rating by WoodsDeck users, that is what you and I give for a film. It may be a low or high depending upon our views. Someone of us may like the film very much and give 10 upon 10 but someone else may find it worth only 5 upon 10. There is a normalization done at this stage to prevent biasing of the score towards a particular group of audience.

2) Critic Reviews:

Reviews by popular critics and film trade analysts’ opinions differ on their critical analysis of each & every scene from the film and interpretation from them. Some movies may have an intense story and requires a behind the screen understanding. Critics are good at them and offer unbiased views about it.

3) Crowd Sentiment:

Sentiment of the tweets analysed and average of positive, negative and neutral tweets about the movie are calculated. Thanks to the growing trend of tweeting that we could use it positively for our purpose. Every day, in an average there are about 20,000 hashtags running around about a recently released film. They may also be of differing in nature, positive, negative or even neutral opinions.

Our task is to analyse the sentiment of all of them and take the average of it and use here.

What are unique features distinguished in WoodsDeck Score ?

1. Mix of both critic & user reviews

There is a balancing of user’s as well as critic’s ratings done by us. If we take the IMDb for discussion, they use a weighted average rating depending on only the user’s votes. The Metascore from Metacritic also calculates the rating based on the weight given to some critics, say 50 who give quality reviews and then normalize them. While assigning weights to the scores may lead to clustering of the views, we take the factor called as Crowd Sentiment.

2. Significance given to Crowd Sentiment element

It is not few person’s opinion but a mass crowd’s perception and reception of the films. There may be as many as 100000 - 1000000 tweets to be considered before going for the scoring of this factor !

So how WoodsDeck Score is effective ?

The WoodsDeck Score is a purely scrupulous rating of your favorite movies and others. Even the very same day of the release of the film, you get to know its response from the audience through WoodsDeck Score.

It’s just a single swipe in the WoodsDeck website or App(http://bit.ly/1QdjCfx) that it takes to look at the rating. So do not get to miss this feature exclusively made for you and start using it right away at www.woodsdeck.com

Miruthan Review

Finally the movie which acclaimed it as the first ever ZOMBIE movie of kollywood. And the movie is crisp enough to fit into a Hollywood type of screenwriting. The movie starts with an inciting incident and gets into a near normal life of the protagonist. But the maker keeps this portion as  short, that our set mood is not flipped.

After that all you would see is group of ZOMBIEs jumping and leaping, trotting behind normal persons with an intention to "bite" them. A cohort tries to escape from them. The movie rolls.

This chase gets pepped up by few inflicted incidents. None fits logically. A team rush to find the vaccine but lands up finding a different "elixir", a doctor who had a scratch have a prolonged incubation period, suddenly a doctor cones with a solution that zombies are hydrophobic, another idea that some individuals are immune to ZOMBIE virus attack.

The director takes everything for granted. 90% can turn rage in a fraction of second and can be shot at their head...but as mentioned above, some have a different incubation period. None can answer how many magazines jayam Ravi would have fired. Everlasting supply of bullets.

But the movie is engaging, the director pumps melodramatic scenes where he intends to make us  emotionally filled and connected. Some goes overboard. Especially the climax sequence.

Jayam Ravi does his justification to the role as he had done in his earlier movies. D Imman's BGM elates the mood of the film in desired  places.

Overall, the movie clears the mark, being a first ZOMBIE attempt in kollywood But can't score high as well owing to some logical burrows and melodramatic intrusions..

Verdict: A fair enough ZOMBIE day out

Jil Jung Juck Review

Some makers have an utmost love for  "absurdity" that they want to proclaim it in each and every scene of the movie. That absurdity was well received in "Soodhu kavvum" where absurdity was tangled around a bizarre abduction incident, absurdity had a lukewarm welcome in "Moodar koodam" where it was tangled around a hostage incident, recently we had witnessed "144" but it wasn't appreciated.

In gross, we used to place them under a blanket terminology "black/dark comedy", but this genre's pioneer Pushkar - Gayathri faced a wash out in both of their movies. So, a dark comedy wouldn't click always unless it's grounded with some contemporary issues..even Kamal haasan flattened in Mumbai express handling this genre.

Coming to JIL JUNG JUCK, the movie is a blatant form of black comedy filled with absurdity and quirkiness...the names like "Rolex Rauther", marundhu, pai, attack, Dr. Kottalakal (there is a absurd usage of his name too) are typical for the genre. "Cheer girls" is a name for torture evoking ants. There are lot of "tongue in the cheek" counters and one liners which can be understood only by "blue" minded persons. "Ulaga cinema", "Ugandese" dialogue and , "hara hara mahadevaki" modulation.

But are they enough to knead the plot and make it interesting?? The makers had tremendous confidence in their defacto comedy chirps, that they never had bothered about a vast segment of audience who remain ignorant what these chirps are about. This movie is intended only for a fractional population, an urban black comedy lovers with a quirky mind.

Interestingly the music director, editor and DOP are the ones who had given 100% of their work to uplift the genre. BGM and tone of the movie screams "hey you are seeing a dark comedy movie man!!!"...who would rather intend to use a carnatic score in a serious action encounter scene??

The film believes in " butterfly effect of chaos " whereby they highlight the fact that, whatsoever happening in the movie shouldn't demand logical explanation. Right from the first quirky plot point of the movie till the climax (where they triplicate the end and then converge) you should not judge it.

If you are ridiculous enough to the petty tickles in the movie, if you are satisfied enough with that and never bother about the absurd ongoing on the screen, this movie rejoices you in parts.but it is not a vivacious attempt to make a total entertainer. Dheeraj vaidhy turns unfortunately to be the next Pushkar- Gayathri.

Verdict: an absurd comedy working in parts

Visaaranai Review

1. Some movies gives you the bitter most reality of the society that on seeing those movies, we gotta feel the "insecureness of the society" in which we live. They trash the last ray of hope too that we had sustained in our life..does the system meant to protect us really protect us??? If so, is there any egalitarianism prevailing in that system?? When do we get victimized by that system itself?? What happens when we turn prey to that system?? This movie raises all these questions as if slapping in our face. Dire black movie.

2. We have seen POLICE in various forms. Right from omnipotent "singam" to sirippu police.. But what are they in reality?? Are they independent in taking any action or are they mere watch dogs of bureaucracy??

3. We just scan through small news columns addressing " 4 men caught in a robbery case ", " 3 men shot dead in an encounter". What is the black prequels of those columns??

Vetrimaran is a crafty film maker who also has strong insight of the society. This makes his presence visible in many scenes of the movie. In a sequence where Pandi and co were made to cleanse the station there is an announcement keep on relaying in the background regarding the do's and don't s for ayudha pooja.

The movie moves in the point of view of Pandi who had been snatched up in a suspect case. He has confusion for what he has been snatched and beaten black and blue..the same confusion is conveyed to us by the non-linear narration.. The next half an hour moves as a deep hell for them. We just hear lathi sounds and screaming sounds. The sound design was such that we feel the intense torture unbearable. The aftermath of torture episodes makes us writh in pain. Like a horror movie where we are placed in a position awaiting the ghost, here we await for strikes, beats and torture.

Once the episode winds up and they are freed, they get trapped seemingly in another chaos. The rest, i save it for those who intend to watch it on screen.

The protagonists, here belong to marginalized sector of the society, who work in menial jobs in Andhra. The "system" tosses them to predate in a burglary case. They need a XYZ, to show off, so they force them to agree. Just a random person named as Afzal is enough for the POLICE to victimize him and his friends too. That's how the "system" solves 35% of the cases.

In second half, we get introduced to another victim who falls prey to high profile "system". He is a trump card in politics.one party wants him to confess, other party wants him screwed. What happens next and how the protagonists get entangled in the  "sabotage of system" is the plot.

The director wants to strike the root of the jargon " POLICE is your friend". He had created POLICE with different shades and faces to throw light on their unwarranted system. We have a policeman, who distributes prasadham and trashes in the next scene just because the "system" forces him to produce the accused in 3 days. We have another policeman who speaks softly to make them agree. We have Muthuvel, who despite being ethical, is forced to sacrifice the scapegoats. We have a policeman, who squeezes the person who made her daughter a doctor, for his benefit. We have a policeman who speaks philosophy "each life has a purpose so as death". But all have a common objective, to screw the scapegoats to save their skin.

The editing (late TE Kishore) is as crisp segueing the events to its finest. So as cinematography. But all fall in place, by the neatly woven script. This movie is not for all, but if you love watching realistic cinema, you should not miss this out.

Verdict: A realistic, genuine venture on the system maliciousness

Bangalore Naatkal Review

But for casting, the screenplay, shots and the rhythm of the movie is mostly unaltered so that we get the same feel as Bangalore days gave to us.

The movie defines emotions to the core and relations to its finest form. Most multi star films have their leads as friends, but considering the fact they have to be shown as close as possible in a semi conservative society, they are cousins here. The story shows the transformation of all of them in Bangalore.

Ammu is a girl, who sacrificed her dreams and nods for marriage to a nerdy introvert. Despite, reaching her dream destination Bangalore she leads a gloomy life. Her cousins paint her life with all fun an joy. All the characters get transformed towards the end.

Love of kannan ( kutty), love of Arjun, guilt of Shivaprakash "suffocating pain" krishnan s father has all are addressed in a seemingly "feel good" manner.  It is power of Anjali Menon's screenplay that merges all the threads into a blissful "feel good" drama.

Some of the characters are seemingly "Mollywood" clichéd. Why kannan's father leaves home and goes to Goa?? The subtle line regarding Arjun's parents and the "transformation" kannan's mother pose after reaching Bangalore can be understood only if you have a "mallu" tinge in you, at least in taste.

The movie says one thing loudly. In life everything bud, blossom, flower up and wither down. Every relationships transform but for few. So love each moment in your life..

Further, it shows how CITY life can free up minds of some like kannan's mother. Its a place where archaic minds crave for modernism and modern minds seek cultural resort..

A feature of the movie which will alienate major segment of B and C audience is its "marked slowness" in narration. The first half moves in establishing all characters with almost no twists and filled with more urbanism. To say, the movie flows like a river but for twist regarding Shivadas and the final bike race.

If you are a "feel good" movie lover and haven't watched the original version, this movie will suffice. But for those who had watched in malayalam, its difficult to erase the characters from your mind and fit new ones, further you know the flow of the movie, which will dampen the feel goodie emotion..

Verdict: An optimal remake, making a first time watcher feel good.

Irudhi Suttru (Saala Khadoos) Review

I. "Boxing" is always considered a tailored game for cinema as it involves ferociousness, one to one confrontation, rise - fall emotional ride and affixing to audience pulse hitherto...so we often get movies grounded on "boxing"...this movie couples boxing with feminism ride and ego clashes making it realistic in its major part excluding certain cinematic upheaval moments.

II. The movie involves three ego battles

1. The hate - love ( I prefer the word love rather than masterly affection or gratitude taking into consideration the leap Rithika Singh makes on the closing shot ;) )relationship between a venom tongued boxing coach and a ferocious tigress he rears to quench his ego

2. The clash of ego between sisters, out of which one can go to an extent of injuring other purposefully to halt the growth..she feels, she had been deprived of better coaching just because of her sister..this thread sounds fresh

3. The EGO rivalry between the head coach and Madhavan.... a cinematic hook spot..

But these EGO clashes are etched out with blood and flesh that we feel the emotional ride and the arc imbibe us too..songs are placed to highlight these emotion to us and not as distractions..

III. Madhavan brings out his best possible body language and disdainful dialogue delivery in the movie..the way he attends the enquiry session, the way he deals Rithika in the first boxing class, his disgraceful ring side discipline all makes his character the coarser and rougher form of what Sharukh did in "chak de India"

Rithika...how a debutant can uphold this hefty body language?? The scene, where she stand in the corner of the ring after punching the referee is enough to make her visiting card, to follow, the scene where she confronts her sister with deception...furious acting and nuance filled body language...that's it..

I liked the junior coach character (Nasser) after the two...Even if this character is a nugget to the veteran, he cruises it in ease...

IV. The above said contents are packed tightly like staking ironed clothes in a bag by the technical department

1. Screenplay:  well, its a EGO trip movie, you need to establish the emotional connectivity with audience, tell the prologue of individuals, make them CONFRONT, wrap it up...it should be done in < 2 hours..that's the crispness of the screenplay...a scene where Madhavan has to narrate his personal life was cut in a way that we know the emotional residue in him... Consider the yesteryear movies where a flashback would have been intruded then..

A reference to Ghengis khan, made as a passer by is judiciously stitched in the final knock...that's the level of perfection a hyperlink screenwriting should be..

2. Editing, cinematography and raw re recording makes the movie intense, slick and enhances the mood of the narrative...

V. The movie doesn't speak something novel, it just slickly narrates a emotional boxing ride, in a skilful craft...it takes sometime to get acquainted with the dialogue, which sounds overboard to some extent, but that intensity is needed for an emotional drama like this..

I wondered how a fair skinned girl would get incorporated in a role ( in Tamil, a north Madras fishergirl) like this...I hoped the movie will sound like a horribly lip synced bi lingual... But all the loose threads were tied with reasons..

Verdict: A taut well crafted EGO ride
Rating: 3.75/5

Aranmanai 2 Review

Sequels or franchise in broader term may involve two different branches from a common stem or even the same problem in different atmos.. But when a movie is mere replicated in the same atmos what you get is aranmanai 2...it cannot be said as clichéd, stereotyped or formulaic as other movies...it is mere re-doing...in a sequel, you can have déjà vu feel with perspective to some scenes which serve as links between two stories or traces of the prequel, but here you seldom feel you are watching yet another movie..it is like a complimentary strand of DNA, running in same 3'-5' direction without even changing its course..

A haunted palace where a  ghost frequent and hooks an insider, ghost being visible only to the eyes of a child, entry of the persons, entry of a said savior (as rajini did in chandramukhi and same Sundar c did in aranmanai), a plot point clueing the plight of the ghost, segueing of flash back, clash of powers and the end... Nothing has changed..you expect a black ambiguous shadow to appear, it appears... You expect a person going air blown, he does so...you expect the ghost needs a person s physique to get embodied, it does so... Every scene is conveyed via dialogues prior hand, for the fact that the director doesn't want even a kid to think a bit...

Stuff like comedy ( which seldom works out ), a bikini song, a saree drop, navel show (lesser than previous version), an irritating one side love track between Soori and kovai sarala, troubling songs are packed considering the commercial mileage and for pulling the uncouthly plot to a little more than 2 hours..

Its not a bad job to recreate commercially selling things..BUT what USP has been added?? What are the new scopes in an old script?? How conflicts can be stirred in a better way?? How to make a valuable entertainer for the audience??? Matters...

The movie leaves us unanswered regarding these questions...its like  saying, "I had reaped money in previous version of this...why not I sell the same stuff and reap money again??"

Verdict: Nothing but sheer repetition

Gethu Movie Review

Review by: Dinesh

How to spoil an average thriller festooned with scintillating visuals?? Director of the movie Thirukumaran is the right person to answer..his aim is big...he designed his hero who despite being a librarian can knockout a sniper assassin with his fists, to save ISRO chief Kamaal (A cinematic version of Dr.Kalam)...His hero despite lacking macho power never gets a brutal hit from any of the 25 odd persons in 2-3 fight sequences..His heroine despite being a foreigner (in reality) hails from an Iyengar household..uff..the movie is way out different from reality with least possible logic.

The film is filled with best possible photographic shots...for this alone, they had selected a dream hill station with a beautiful falls and greenery all around...Sukumar's camera is damn astounding...to an extent, he keeps lot of slo-mo shots where Udhayanidhi slowly turns with a ferocious look ( don't laugh) either after hitting or before hitting an opponent..Udhayanidhi is indebted to the cinematographer to the core for his painstaking efforts to show him atleast... as an action hero..yes it is the hero's debut action venture.

None of the scenes are crafted, the romance scenes nullify the absence of a separate comedy track, the screenplay is lame, unfocused and it seldom grips us...the director should have spent atleast half of his efforts put towards creating visuals, in these areas..alas,all his efforts had gone in vain.

Vikraanth, comes and goes with a theme music...a howling noise..and does nothing..but for one song. all the others are either misplaced or unnecessary.

GETHU - AN AVERAGE PLOT DAMPENED BY POOR EXECUTION.

Kathakali Review

Review by: Dinesh

Pandiraj always make us wonder..how he directs movies on unrelated grounds consecutively in short spans..pasanga was different from vamsam which was indeed different from Marina and kedi billa killadi ranga..he is like a chef who boils rasam in a pan, empties it, make hakka noodles next, empties it, make halwa and so..for him the pan should not be empty...considering makers like Bala, GVM and Selvaragahavan who can't make a movie not resembling others, pandiraj is highly "plastic"..

Kathakali is a movie which revolves around a murder of a baddie and the suspicion regarding " who would have done it??"...like suseenthran movies the protagonist is amalgamated to his middle class family, his troubles chase them too, he is in a deep soup, at the core of which he rise to save his skin..he has a love story too which appears dissociated from the main story..

B story : (love portion)
We can't expect makers like Pandiraj or Suseenthran to cater an "Hollywood" pattern commercial where the story seldom skips its trajectory... Its risky commercially...so to pacify the variety seeking audience, make the protagonist love..this will occupy 45 minutes of the script...how to make it different?? Now the directors aim at "random cell phone loves".. Where two persons getting connected oddly, fall in tandem love thereafter.. Spice it up with counter dialogues from a comedian, contemporary ideas like spoofing the songs of " kalpana"..but on a different note, will a girl fall in love with a guy who stalks her and asks for a dozen of condemns in her pharmacy so easily??oh..45 minutes is over...I have to go back to main plot....murder takes place..

Main story:
After the dull love track, we get a fairly logical thriller..the chase of the suspects is narrated with an impending pressure piling up in us..I am not that inquisitive to leave a spoiler here..some suspects are added just to divert us...except for sudoku solving headers, others would  keep guessing on who is the murderer....if you know the answer prior hand, better don't watch the movie..

The cinematography is explicitly awesome... Especially the rainy nights in sodium vapour lamps...Balasubramaniam is the DOP... As plastic the maker, so as the DOP..

The heroine speaks in a intentionally childish note..the movie as such is an advertisement to Samsung Galaxy which Vishal use,use and keep on using with such an everlasting battery..

The movie is a  definite watchable thriller with near logical perfection.

   Verdict: A fairly logical thriller.

Rajini Murugan Review

Review by: Dinesh

Some actors have a "run on the wheel" period in their career, during which they either get good flicks off board or have their color filled product released during festive seasons..Sivakarthikeyan is in such a period..to say, the scripts chose him and he do justice to those..

Genre: Comedy, Director: Ponram, Cast: Sivakarthikeyan, Keerthy Suresh, Soori, Samuthirakani
Festive season releases are way different from ordinary seasons..the audience want their euphoric state to get amplified on watching a movie rather than watching a unconventional plot...so, commercial potboilers make "merry go ride" if they quench the appetite of the audience..

Rajini murugan is such a commercial potboiler where director Ponram, gives you a palatable "pongal" with right proportions of sweetness...sweetness here is the comedy which works out in most of the places..the story revolves around a prototype "maduraikaaran", his drive for childhood love, his objective to save his grandfather's house..sounds familiar??...of course, it is one of the "n"th "madura" movie..

The director knows this fact well, so he had improvised the punish plot with  interesting character details..a person who often conducts get together function for collection, a rude lawyer who is a Rajnikanth fanatic and advises his daughter with cinema dialogues and so...I felt a bit more footage could have been allotted to this sparkles..
One more authentic factor that works out well is the "outside court panchayats" which are portrayed with near  perfection and this keeps the second half "alive"... Even Soori, a near exploited comedian, is used well..that is, he seldom irritates us as his recent movies..

If I hadn't mentioned about the " to be " dream girl, Keerthi Suresh, I go half done..Even this is not her debut movie, this movie moves her close to the hearts of 1 crore young chaps (i am one of them) going to watch the movie..her character is not that worthy, but Balasubramaniam s camera elates her expressions so high...he highlights her eyes and  her smile during its early eruption....she dance with grace, a shot amidst, " UN mela oru kannu" song where she twinkles her single eye, and say "verum mannu" is a delight to watch...she will go places..

What more a movie can have to conceal its thin story line and a mediocre screenplay?? Who bother these amidst enjoyable songs and comedy clippings?? It fills you with joy when you leave the screen...that's what the crew aimed at..that's what an average viewer expects...

Rating : 3.0
