Kaththi Movie Review

This question was asked to A.R.MURUGADOSS in his latest interview in a Tamil magazine, and he had smartly replied “please ask this question after seeing KATHTHI”…
So ARM had decided to deliver a strong societal message in this movie and prove him as a director…a path far different from the successful path of THUPPAKI…
Vijay has a compulsion to establish himself as “an actor with societal responsibility” as his “stay cool persona” has been over exploited in yesteryears and always there is a huge group of meme creators waiting to make fun even if he mistakes in a small scale….
Have they succeeded in their attempt???
Well, to make it clear, don’t go with an expectation to see a “THUPPAKI” which is a edge of the seat action thriller with the screenplay racing on a single lane to reach the destination and “cat-mouse” clash between hero and villain…
KATHTHI has a compulsion to satisfy Vijay fans and make the movie commercially appealing, to make the hero-villain confrontation as interesting as possible, but not losing its grip on the “message “ it has to deliver…the screenplay has three layering…the first is a sweet coat starting with an “inciting incident” and uninspiring romantic track between the lead pair (“Kathiresan” Vijay and Samantha) and two back to back songs following the typical “Vijay masala”….then comes a layering of villain hero confrontation and then the core of the movie which tastes bitter when presented alone..
The core revolves in “THANOOTHU” village with an MNC trying to grab it for their industry and people resisting it…here comes “Jeevanandham” (another Vijay), a guy who speaks communist principles and not daring to lift his shoulders even when being beaten up.
By chance, Kathiresan places himself in Jeeva’s shoes when he uses his brawn and brain to rescue the village and tie the loose ends of the movie..
Vijay…this is one of the milestones in his career as he has to “shoulder” the entire movie, to make it commercially appealing with his legs, enact stunts, deliver some well written dialogues penned by ARM, keep the josh in the protest and finally leave the scene after success…”Jeeva” Vijay is one whom we have missed long back (but the role is meager)…Vijay irrespective of the commercial return of this movie, should do more movies like this which will gain him more credits..

Samantha, just a name to the posters, title card and to figure out in songs…I really feel pity how weak a heroine can be depicted in recent commercial movies..Her legs are struggling to match the pace of Vijay…but eventually succumbs..
Neil Nitin Mukesh….a trivial villain who shows his set of facies in all scenes…in this sort of movie where the villain has to share his place with the “societal problem” (remember Shankar movies and Ramanaa”)
Certain specialties need to be mentioned….first is the stunning cinematography especially in songs, stunt scenes and in the flashback where the tone and saturation was different..the camera makes the film worth watching…editing is grip but for few places and stunt scenes and art direction especially the coin-flip one leaves us excited and the last one using all sorts of “agricultural instruments”..

Anirudh already burst the chart with his songs but are stuffed in a small area, rocks in BGM too…
Despite all these, the film might not satisfy hard core Vijay fans and Thuppaki seeking individuals..so the potential for pulling repeat audience is relatively less..Also the slight “documentary” feel might make people who see cinema only as a entertainment media, unsatisfied…
The layering screenplay leaves the movie bit dragging in few places…but ARM has tried his maximum to infuse the message into the “heart” of millions of viewers using Vijay as his vehicle….
This movie might not be the best…but considering his initiative to use cinema as a enlightening media…the movie can be recommended for those who asks about it..
